INTO THE DEPTHS

Prologue

There it was set before you — the monolith, tall and golden with the dark, inky fluid lapping at its base gently. It was the only sign that the catastrophe of last night was real and not just something that you had made up throughout the night.

In an interest in finding out what exactly this otherworldly object was and where it came from, you crept as close to the oil-like liquid as you dared until you could see within its depths. If you hadn’t been watching the soft rippling surface, then you would have missed the dull flash of something passing by and the quiet echoing clicks that followed it. Whatever it was, it hadn't seemed to notice the gaping puddle which you looked at it through.

You knew that perhaps you should leave the puddle, the monolith, and everything else about this behind and never look back, but your intrigue fought your instincts, and you ended up leaning closer over the surface as you tried to get a better look into the depths. Further and further, you went over the iridescent liquid until your body could reach no more and in you went beneath the surface.
